study links Vitamin A in sunscreen to skin tumors
When you read the headline that vitamin A in sunscreens is linked to skin tumors, the first that comes to your mine is; "What? Are you serious, vitamin A,the vitamin A that is supposed to help your vision and healthy skin?" Well, that was the way I reacted. I have to read the article from Environmental Working Group like 3 times to really sink in. The abstract of the article would be:
An independent science advisory panel has voted to confirm federal researchers' conclusion that retinyl palmitate, a form of vitamin A found in two-fifths of U.S. sunscreens, speeds the development of skin tumors and lesions when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight.
First, I applied the techniques that my husband advice me for managing my stress over the information that I get about harmful substances and toxics in personal care products. According to my understanding, there is a harmful and toxic effect on your skin when you applied a sunscreen with retinyl palmitate. I understood that there is a harmful effect on your skin when you applied a sunscreen with retinyl palmitate(wikipiadia definition link of retinyl palmitate) on your skin and your skin then comes exposed to the sunlight. The Environmental working group article states that:
The NTP(National Toxicology Program)'s December 2010 draft assessment summarizes a one-year cancer study that culminated more than a decade of research by the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), jointly funded by the NTP and FDA. Since 2001 the center has published 17 studies and reviews on the toxicity and chemistry of retinyl palmitate on skin. These documents show that the chemical breaks down in sunlight to photomutagenic compounds, forms skin damaging-free radicals, and "[causes] events that affect a large segment of the chromosome" (Mei 2005, 2006; Xia 2006).
Now, you have to be cautious here because one does not want to misinterpret the information. Therefore, I keep on reading about this fact and I realized that retinyl palmitate is commonly used in anti-aging and wrinkle creams. I concluded that you can keep using retinyl palmitate but you need to put it on your skin when your skin is not going to be exposed to sunlight. Night is a good time to do your anti-aging rutine with retinyl palmitate, since it has been used and proven to keep skin looking young and healthy. There you have it, retinyl palmitate does not cause tumors on the skin, the fact that retinyl palmitate is exposed to sunlight when it is on your skin, do speeds the development of skin tumors and lesions.
In my opinion I think you should;
Do not buy suncreens with retinyl palmitate
Do not buy creams with retinyl palmitate that you used when you are exposed to sunlight.
Do buy and use creams with retinyl palmitate that you are planning to use overnight for a anti-aging treatment.
